Sometimes All You Need Is To Show Up

It’s a cliche, but it’s a good one: “Sometimes all you need to do is just show up.” I have seen its power in my own life. As a matter of fact, it worked for me just yesterday.

Sometimes you just need to show up Maurilio Amorim

I cannot tell you how many times I have abandoned personal growth goals because I was too afraid, too lazy or too discouraged to even try, so I didn’t even bother showing  up.

You can’t fail if you don’t try, right? Wrong.

For me the greatest battle is winning over my mind. Yesterday morning I didn’t want to exercise. I had convinced myself that I would be better off taking a rest day, but I didn’t. I decided to just show up at the gym. Amazing things happen when you’re present. I met a couple of friends and ended up with a strong workout that left me feeling energized afterward.

But there’s so much more than just showing up at the gym. Sometimes just showing up at a potential client will get you the sale because you’re present at the right time. Showing up at a counseling session when you don’t feel like it, might be the first step to saving your marriage. Showing up at your child’s dance recital after a hard working day might create a bond that could last a lifetime.

So we need to be present, fully engaged and committed to make the kind of progress we want. However, these are secondary actions. They don’t matter if you are not there. Because before you can engage, you must first show up.

What area of your life do you need to just show up?

It was Woody Allen who said that 80% of success is showing up.

If you can win the battle of the mind, you are more likely to win the war.

Thanks for the reminder Maurilio, as always, I love your ideas.

Maurilio, I really needed this message this morning. I need to show up at a couple of places today. Thank yo for the post.

I often find that if I show up, my heart will follow. If I wait for the right motivations to show up (which so many young people do nowadays!), then I won't show up to anything! I'll keep missing out on what might be a great experience, or something good for me!

    Thanks for the reminder, Maurilio!

Great point: fear of the unknown robs us to the most fun and serendipitous moments in life. And thanks. I fixed the typo.

When I don't want to but then push past it and actually show up… there's almost always something that turns out to be a big win in some way. Not just "glad" I did it feeling but a BIG win in some unique way that goes way beyond that moment.

I think a lot in life is a test and we get an extra reward if we obey and go.

I completely agree, and experience has only reinforced this for me. I could tell so many stories in my life when I wanted to quit and not show up, but when I did show up, something incredible happened. nnRemember the time I showed up and made my first eagle putt? Good times :)
