What’s My Color?

Find colors that work best on you is an important fashion foundation. If you know what colors help you and what colors to stay away from will help you look your best. While every rule has exceptions, and with color shades in the mix, exceptions abound. But here’s a few color rules that generally work for most of us.

If you have dark hair and complexion:  black, white and jewel-tone (deep) colors work well for you. Stay away from pastels and deep green and most browns.

If you have light hair and fair skin: Black, pinks, some pastels like pale blue can look really good on you. Be careful with white because it can wash you out. If you’re very blond, stay away from yellows or you risk the danger of looking like a giant banana.

If you have red hair and features: Hunter green, dark browns, plums and some deep blues are good choices. You might want to avoid pinks and bright colors such as bright reds. After all, you don’t want to look like you’re on fire.

Black usually works for most everyone and it also “hides a multitude of sins.” White is tricky. It can wash you out if your skin is very fair, and if you’re carrying extra weight, a white t-shirt can hug things you don’t want hugged, a.k.a. “moobs” as in “man boobs.”

Back in the 80′s in the midst of my touring frenzy, a lovely family had our band over for Sunday dinner.  The mother was a “Color Consultant” and she took one look at me with my dark brown hair and pale skin wearing a pale green sweater and said “Oh no, honey.  That sweater completely washes you out”!  She went on to advise me what colors to embrace and which ones to run from.  She diagnosed me as a “Winter”.  So I have pretty much relegiously bought only Dark Blue’s and Green’s.  (though now that my hair is a bit more grey, I can pull of light greens and blues as well)  Purples and of course Black.  White works well, unfortunately it ends up working better as a dumping ground for coffee and salsa.  Whenever I’ve strayed from that color pallet I’ve always regretted it.

Virginia Tech, my alma mater, pairs Chicago Maroon and Burnt Orange.   Needless to say, my wife (who is not a Hokie) cringes anytime I purchase and/or wear anything displaying school spirit.

When not pulling for the Hokies, I’ve really started to enjoy bold colors and patterns in a button-down with with jeans.  My dry cleaner even thanked me for having interesting shirts because all he gets to clean is white and blue button-downs!

I remember those days. The system was called “Color me Beautiful” and I’m also a winter. I got the winter coloring and Fall, but their Summer/Spring distinction always eluded me. Therefore I kept my guide to only 3 main types of skin.

Interestingly, I took a bunch of shirts to the dry cleaners the other day and the girl just told me I didn’t have to wait for a ticket. “Don’t you need to tag them?” I asked. Her reply: “No one has shirts like yours. We know your stuff” I’m taking that as a compliment. :)

Hmm. No advice for the brothers. Cuz we don’t wear color?

Walker, brothers would follow under the dark hair and complexion category.

Blues and other darker colors work best for me. The dark blues make my hazel eyes look very blue. I get a lot of comments on my eyes when I wear darker colors.

When people compliment me on colors I make a mental notice and file under, “wear this again.” :)

My closet is definitely full of dark colors, especially blues and grays.
