How Men Should Wear a Shirt

Too many men wear ill-fitting shirts. The Fashion Friday post is back to help fashion-challenged men, and the women who love them, to find a good looking shirt. If I’m going to give someone the shirt off my back, I rather do it in style.

First you want your shirt fitted at the shoulders and back. This is usually down to the ‘yoke’ of the shirt, which is the piece of material at the upper back that dictates the fit and shape of the rest of the shirt. You want it to fit snug, but not to feel restrictive when leaning forward. Equally, your sleeves ought to cover most of your watch when you put your arms out in front of you. Remember that a slightly tapered shirt will usually be your best option, otherwise the fabric will balloon around your lower torso and give you extra “visual” pounds.

The length of a shirt is also a key consideration, as it will determine how the shirt can be worn. Generally if the shirt is longer, you will have to tuck it in. If you want to wear the shirt loose, you will want a shorter length.

fitted shirt

If you're shapped like Taylor Lautner (and who isn't?), you will look good wearing the very fitted shirt. But if you're carrying extra weight, make sure you don't look like a sausage casing.

This is a how a casual, untucked shirt needs to look.

shirt sleeves rolled up

Since I featured Taylor, I must give Robert Pattinson props for rolling up his sleeves properly: right above the elbow. Notice you can roll up the sleeves even with a tie.

how to roll up your shirt sleeves

There's always a proper way to do just about everything, including your rolling up your sleeves.

How do you prefer: tucked or un-tucked shirts?

I think it really depends on the setting I am in. Work for me I definitely tuck, but when not in work setting untucked.

  • Steve

I like to wear my shirts untucked. But I don’t want people to think I’m hiding a gut. What should I do?

  • Linda Blunt

I can’t get my husband to untuck his shirts. He says it’s not appropriate.

Dear Mr. Amorim:nnThank you for your excellent blog. I especially appreciate the Friday post on men’s fashion. Where would I be without it? I thought though you should do a section on how a man should dress for working outside in the Canadian winter. Below is a pictorial example.nnIt all starts with the right coat. Note the correct length is just below the waste. You don’t want a lengthy coat or jacket getting caught in your chain saw or interfering when you’re swinging an Axe. Head gear is very important. A hat or hood is fine, but you should have facial covering preferably adjustable and worn tight. You don’t want something flapping around in your face during a blizzard.nnNote too that the model in this figure is wearing mittens not gloves. At one time gloves were in style, but while gloves are cool, frostbite is not. Mittens keep your hands warm and nobody will be impressed with amputated fingers.nnTrousers are to be worn snug but not tight. Also, this is no time to be wearing jeans. They do not keep you warm and they take forever to dry out on the campfire when they get wet. Wool is the fabric of choice and they should be tucked into your boots not worn over them.nnFoot gear must not be ignored. Like your mittens they need to keep your toes from frostbite. They must be waterproof and insulated. They should reach at least to 3 inches below the knees. Also choose a pair that look good, but can also be strapped into snow shoes.nnI’ll look forward to seeing this in your next blog post.nnYour fan and admirernSteve Shantznnhttp://www.flickr.com/photos/steveshantz/?saved=1nn

I want to be cool and wear my collared shirts untucked but then the nerd inside me always seems to tuck them in. My wife thinks I’m so unhip.

  • http://somewiseguy.com Some Wise Guy

I need to buy some new shirts apparently. :)

  • http://www.movingthroughlife.wordpress.com Jcdulaney

I’m a tucked guy because my height does not lend well to a good length for untucked.nnI do like crisp details on a shirt like unique cuffs or collars, or patterns that are not traditional and will set you apart with a tie.nnDo love to wear with jeans and roll up the sleeves just one roll…comfortable.nnOkay, GQ’ed out for the day :) nnGreat post!

Great friday blog, Maurilio. I am a tucked shirt kinda guy but lately, I am into sweaters. I think my french colleagues are work are influencing my style. n@collyder

I’m an untucked kind of guy, but will obviously tuck in if the occasion requires it.

It depends for me. Certain shirts are designed to be tucked and others are not. What really bothers me is when men decide to untuck a dress shirt with jeans and add a suit jacket and think they are hip.nnNo, you are just looking ridiculous!nnI like the comfort and ease of an untucked shirt, but like the crisper look of a tucked in shirt especially when you add a nice belt with matching shoes.n

Tucked. And I love this. Please tell me you did those brilliant cartoons.

That’s t good rule of thumb, Adam.

Make sure your shirt is fitted, specially near the abdomen. Loose shirts create the illusion of hiding fat. Remember the moo moo?

Linda, no matter what fashion says, you have to be comfortable in your own skin first. If he’s not the untuck kind, then leave it alone.

Wow! I think the picture says it all.

Dear Shirtless, nEmbrace you inner nerdiness. If you wait long enough, tucked button down Polos will be back.

Happy shopping. Let’s us know what you got. :-)

You either go with one roll or roll up all the way. Stay away from the lazy roll. :)

As long as you don’t embrace the French beret, I’m ok with french sweaters.

One cannot wear a suit with the shirt untucked. It’s just not right.

  • Anonymous

Great point, Bert. Some guys wear dress shirts that are cut to be tucked: they are too long. nI’ve seen you in your white shoes and white belt. Very stylish.

    I feel validated.

If I had the time and talent I might have done the illustration. Sorry to disappoint.

I’m a premature sleeve-roller and I’m not ashamed to admit it.nnMy bigger issue is with guys who go untucked on a long-sleeve button-down and DON’T roll the sleeves at all. Some even leave the cuffs buttoned. I’m sorry, but that makes it look like you’re wearing a blouse.nn(also, you were great at Dream Weekend. Thanks for sharing!)

    I approve of this validation.

Please add something about the length of the back of the shirt. On some shirts the back is longer than the front. If the back is short, the shirt comes out or ‘gathers’ at the back after bending forward/down and then straightening up.

I’m questioning the validity of your validation approval

I love to wear my shirt untucked but  want it to look sharp and not sloppy. There is an unbelievable new company that make  great dress shirts and are designed to be worn untucked. This is a great new brand and really look forward to its growth. I highly recommend this site for every guy’s wardrobe. Go to http://www.UNTUCKit.com!
